Neonatal Screening

As part of universal neonatal screening, local policy is in place for neonates who:

  • Pass
  • Are referred for further assessment
  • Do Not Attend
  • Require follow-up as they are at risk of progressive hearing loss

Management tips for children with grommets

  • Child can swim but no deep diving
  • No difference in infection rates between swimmers and non swimmers
  • Persistant perforation occurs in 1% to 5% of cases and further surgery may be required at a later stage
  • Grommets should fall out in 6 to 9 months - hole should heal concurrently
  • Grommets associated with aural discharge - Prescription should be topical antibiotic drops, not oral
