- Antibiotic exposure, especially long duration and >1 course in the previous 3 months, in particular the “4-Cs”, ciprofloxacin (quinolones), co-amoxiclav (broad spectrum penicllins,) clindamycin and cephalosporins (3rd generation).
- Gastrointestinal surgery/manipulation.
- Prolonged stay in healthcare settings.
- Serious underlying illness.
- Immunocompromised patients.
- Advancing age (>80% are > 65yrs).
- Chronic renal disease.
- Patients prescribed Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI) i.e. Omeprazole & Lansoprazole.
